KDHE Preventative Unit Gives Update on UST Permits

The KDHE Preventative Unit is pleased to announce that we have two to three new hires starting in September. After their training, they will assist with permit renewal review and processing, in addition to UST Contractor licensing. We understand the frustrations experienced by the tank owners and operators, and plan to improve our response to customer needs in the coming months.

On August 1st, 2023, all '‘'In Effect'’' permits for the 2022-2023 permit cycle were given an ‘Extended’ status if KDHE had received a renewal payment and submission of compliance and renewal documents. With assistance from internal resources, we’re processing as many permit renewals as possible while keeping up with repairs, installations, and UST Contractor licensing tasks. We appreciate your patience as we train new staff to conduct Preventative Unit processes.

If Tank Owners and Operators have already submitted everything for permit renewal, please do not resubmit the renewal documentation, as this slows down KDHEs processing efforts. To confirm what has been submitted for your facility, log in to your KEIMS account at keims.kdhe.ks.gov and select your site by clicking on the blue rectangle in the upper left-hand corner; then click on the “Documents” tab on the left-hand side of your screen. KDHE can see the same documents that you can see. Therefore, if you can see the documentation in KEIMS, that means that KDHE has already received it and it’s in our queue to address as we'’'re able.

According to Kansas Storage Tank Regulations, there are late fees assessed if submissions and payment are not received prior to April 30th. An additional late fee is assessed if documents and payment are not received prior to August 31st. The late fees have not been added in KEIMS accounts due to a backlog of tasks to complete. Be aware that if the compliance information, permit renewal documents and payments were received after April 30th and after August 31st, a late fee will be entered automatically in the Financials tab within the facility specific KEIMS account. The addition of the late fees will occur within the next few months and can be found in KEIMS. A letter will also be sent to the Tank Owners who have late fees applied to their facility accounts.

SIR – Statistical Inventory Reconciliation

If you currently use our SIR service, we need your help with the contract & invoicing process. Please sign and return your contracts along with your payment within 30 days of receipt. We are managing far too many past-due issues which slows down the SIR process. You will start to see a price increase this month due to a vendor rate increase. It’s been over 15 years since we’ve had a price increase so thank you in advance for your understanding.
